Zaria Forman

Wow, am I inspired by this lady, Zaria Forman!

"In addition to exhibitions, recent projects include a series of drawings that served as the set design for the classic ballet Giselle, which premiered in October 2012 at the Grand Theatre of Geneva, Switzerland. Ten of the drawings were also used in the set design for House of Cards, a Netflix TV series directed by David Fincher and starring Kevin Spacey." So her biography reads.

Are these not the most remarkable works of art you've ever seen! She doesn't use a brush, she uses only her fingers!!

She attaches the Board to the wall and then starts working away until you get this.

Amazing eh?

I think she so perfectly captures the ocean. This is a gift!

Welcoming those That View My Blog!

I started this blog a few months back because my passion has always been home decor! It was a perfect outlet to share pictures and ideas while providing a liitle insight into myself and my family!

Lately it hasn't been very easy for us as after 13 years I am about to lose my job. I'm 56, will be 57 in October.  I'm finally realizing that my skills in my current job do not transfer well to another. It appears that presently, in this job market, you need a certificate for just about everything! I've never been unemployable! I've always had a job!

Although technically I'm employed until March 31, 2014, it's been a tremendous strain on me and my family.

I'm allowing this bit of insight to my current affairs, as that's what a blogs all about! It's about sharing. Not only the good times but sometiems it's the bad as well!

When I knew the end was coming I started, or tried to start a business called Dorothy Newcomb's Inspiring Arrangements for Home and Garden, because I thought, well, do what you like to do. Easier said then done, but I'm trying! The concept was simple: let me take what you already have and rearrange it, organize it, in a way that it's new to you and makes you feel like you've had a personal decorator in but with at a fraction of the cost! Also if your struggling wth colors or what to purchase next, I could devise a plan.

Some people thought it was a great idea, others, not so much! Then I started the blog. I've always wanted a blog because I love home decor, and I love my home, which I painstakingly, on a very small budget, try to do all the things I love to it. It's my pride and joy! And I wanted to share it with someone, YOU!

You ,whoever you are, bring me great joy whenever I see that people have visited my page. A blogger's dream I guess!

Well, thank you!

It means the world to me when you visit and I hope that I will always have something worthwhile to share.

I also want to thank those few visiting from Germany! I'm a second generation German, living in Canada, while my mother, who is quite ill, and lives with me still, was born in Nuremburg! It means a great deal to me to know that sharing our German traditions, which we keep alive and well, might resonate with you as well!!

Again, thank you for visiting!
I wish you well and Guten Abend!

Black Is The New White?

According to stylist Lotta Agaton black will be the new white in 2014!
I love black! A room, in my opinion, is not finished unless it has some striking black features, whether that be a bold light fixture, or a black wall mirror. Black makes a room look sexy, doesn't it!
And even though I'm not sure I would go with a completely black interior, although I'v seen some rooms that really impressed me and have seriously tempted me, I think I would find it overall a tad too dark!
What do you think?

I think I would prefer my black to be on the outside of the house! In fact I am so seriously tempted to paint my house black if it wasn't for the siding already on my house. I investigated whether it could be done, to paint over siding, only to find that siding expands and contracts in seasons, and painting it a darker color than it is already is asking for big trouble!

So I guess I'll just dream of one for now!!

Have a look and tell me what you think?

From Chester Nova Scotia, my home province, is designed by Nicholaas Spencer Lewin! Absolutely Love it!!

And here are some others!

I would take any one of these houses. And I would take advantage of it's versality by adding a pop of color to the door or trim.  I think Black is positively bewitching, and charming! I find it has that Old World Charm that I long for!!
Black is not just for Halloween!!
Cheers!

A Day of Pure Love!

A day of Pure Love!
A day of Pay it Forward, a day of remembering those that have passed, a day to say I love you to those you love!
In my small family it's my Mom, my Son, and my Sister, who lives away, and our 2 dogs that I love the most!

What Inspires Me today!

Just recently I stumbled upon, the website of the design team Solis Betancourt and Sherrill!
Just love how they use all the elements in interior design, balancing the modern and the traditional, to create comfort.
Here are some of their interior designs!

They have a great concept of how space works in interior design. Doesn't hurt that they have a lot of space to work with!!

Homemade Febreze!

I can't live without Febreze! I have dogs, my mom and son smoke, and that just drives me crazy!!

So I found this homemade recipe on Pinterest!

What you'll need:
1/8 Cup of fabric softener (I used Downy April Fresh)
2 tablespoons Baking Soda
Hot tap water
Spray bottle (I used my empty 27 oz. Febreze bottle)

Preparation:
Using a funnel, pour fabric softener and baking soda into your spray bottle. Fill spray bottle with hot tap water and shake well. Don't forget to twist the nozzle over to the LOCK position if you're using a Febreze bottle, or you might fall on your hiney. Now go spray every fabric surface in your house and take a nap on your very comfortable and now un-stinky couch. :)

Store-bought Febreze: $5.59
Homemade Febreze: $0.15
Total Savings: $5.44 OR 97.3%!

Can't wait to try it!!

Caught Up In Cottage Love!

The first thing I think about when I think about getting away or downsizing my life a bit I look towards a cottage! A return to a less formal and structured existence, to be more like the imperfect cottage garden. A theme carried indoors as well as outdoors.
Since I do not have a cottage, nor is it in the forseable future, I'll have to be content with dreaming about one!!
Here are some of my favorite cottage pictures!

And of course every perfect cottage would have a view!!
The spirit of a cottage is infused with nostalgia, a charm recreated by colorful weathered paints, warm stained wood, cosy built-ins, planked walls, and vintage accessories and details!
I would love to live in a cottage, because to live in such a small space, you would need to be very organized to avoid clutter! And that just suits me to a tee!!
Happy Cottaging!!
